Personalized Obituaries...

The preparation of an obituary is a task usually left for our grief-stricken family members and friends.

Gathering the facts and qualities of a person as we knew them in life is especially overwhelming while we are mourning their loss, and so much can get lost in translation or left out entirely, among all of the stress and confusion.

Pre-planning your obituary allows you to express in your own words exactly what you want highlighted about your life and how you would like to be remembered.

Because the obituary is not just a death notice, you want to be sure that it is accurate and includes those details and special moments in life that you are most proud of.

The obituary and death notice are oftentimes confused as one.  A death notice is the brief listing in the obituary section of a newspaper that usually includes your name, date of death and location/time of services.  The obituary is the more  'featured article' describing the highlights of your life.

At one time an obituary was only published for well-known individuals.  However, thanks to the internet, it is common place today that the majority of funeral homes either have their own site, or are  linked up to an obituary service .

It is an important service  because it helps connect us to people in our past that we may have lost contact with.  For example, an uncle died recently and while reading his on-line obituary, I came across a note of condolence from a childhood friend who now lives across the country.

It also brings to light that a personalized obituary is no longer reserved solely for the 'well-known' population -- making it more important than ever to pre-plan your own.
