Life Stories...
We are all different, but I'm willing to bet
that we all have family stories that we treasure -- whether its hearing for the umpteenth time a 'remember that day when'
type of story at a fun, informal family gathering -- or the stories we hear regarding our family origins and how they came
to this Country.
One way to retain those noteworthy
aspects of your family history
--
or to share special events with others about the past -- is to preserve them in writing.
Maybe you are
a person who has always wanted to write a story for family history; or perhaps you have thought
many times to contribute an article to a trade or military publication but haven't quite taken the steps to do
so because you've never been comfortable with your writing, grammar or spelling ability; maybe you don't have computer access
or lack the necessary mechanical skill to get it done.
Such was the case
of a relative who experienced some unique happenings during World War II. However, with my editing ability and assistance
he has submitted several of his 'life stories' to various newsletter publications -- one of which was published in a
book.
One story I personally treasure is about my grandmother's
journey from Italy to America at the age of 4. Her father had already been living in "Boston" for approximately a year when
her mother decided it was time to join him.
During their train ride to Naples, the city in
which they would board the ship to the United States, Mount Vesuvius erupted and the train they were riding in was buried
under its ashes for 4 days, until everyone was rescued. Its an incredible story and one which my own children
(100 years later!!) have used in history class projects during their elementary schooling.
*Preserving your 'stories' in writing is a great way of passing them on to
other generations*
